Listening to the Fetal Heart
Starting at around 24 weeks, the fetal heartbeat can sometimes be heard with our Tummy Scope. The heartbeat is best heard over the baby's back, which often seems firm when you feel around the uterus. It may be difficult to hear the fetal heart by stethoscope if the mother is overweight or if the placenta is on the front wall of the uterus.
PLEASE NOTE: The Tummy Scope is for entertainment purposes only. It is not a fetal doppler and is not a reliable method to monitor a baby's heartbeat. Every pregnancy is unique and hearing the fetal heartbeat will depend on many factors, such as the position of the baby and how she/he is situated in the womb. Babies change position in the womb so sounds may be easier to detect on some days more than others. You should always consult your physician or obstetrician with any questions or concerns regarding your pregnancy. Feel free to bring your stethoscope or fetal doppler along to a prenatal visit!
